MTS Alternative Learning Programs
Individualized Independent Study Program
This is an individualized Independent study where students come by appointment. Learners can either be part-time students (making up missing credits while enrolled in the regular high school program) or full-time students of another MTS program. Students earn their credits after completing a specified number of seat time hours, packets and projects, and passing the required tests.
The Independent Study Program offers an array of required and elective courses which are fully compatible with state and MTS graduation requirements.
Community Learning Program
Minnesota Transitions School offers an opportunity for learners who are looking for a high school diploma but are missing credits toward graduation from their home school. The Community Learning Program combines great teachers, a unique learning environment, and students of all cultures who come from the entire Metropolitan community, resulting in a dynamic and effective education program.
The Community Learning Program uses learning circles as a way to offer you classes that you wouldn't find in traditional high schools. It focuses on helping students pass the Basic Standards Tests, especially ESL students. Some of the circles focus on specific passions, such as art, the medical profession, movies, college prep, and other possibilities as well. There is also an Internet program for those students who prefer to study at home.
Classes are held at three convenient locations: one in South Minneapolis, one on the edge of the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus, and one in the Urban Academy building in downtown St. Paul. Classes are offered six days a week, from 9:45 in the morning to 9:00 in the evening most days. You may choose to attend classes five days a week, one, two, or three evenings a week, or just on Saturdays.
The Multicultural Indigenous Academy
The MIA circles focus on developing, strengthening, and promoting ones cultural identity in the learning environment for those 17 years old or older. Those with a strong sense of identity tend to live healthier lives, succeed in academics, and achieve their career goals. Learners are offered the opportunity to learn from an indigenous perspective while striving for academic and career success.
The MIA works on the philosophy of "Learning through culture, not just about culture." They believe that those with a strong sense of identity tend to live healthier lives and achieve greater success in their academic and career goals. Learners are offered the opportunity to learn from an indigenous perspective while striving for academic and career success.
Our Mission. . .
is to provide a place where learners will develop critical thinking skills, work within a cooperative, develop a principled world perspective, and be able to demonstrate mastered skills in a real-world context. Learners gather for 12 hours each week in the learning circles. In addition to the learning circles, each learner will develop and commit to completing a minimum of 20 additional hours of independent study, with the support of the learning circle.
