Students have the opportunity to meet with Twin Cities film professional to discuss careers in video, and are introduced to the various post-secondary options for film. Additionally, each year they share their works with peers, parents, and community members at MTS's Annual Film Festival.

Write, act, shoot, direct and edit your own film.  Students create all original narrative and documentary movies using Canon GL2 Digital Video Cameras and Final Cut Pro 6 editing software.  With the DMA's Sound Studio right next-door, video students have access to quality post-production and original scores for each video. Be a part of ComArts' annual 5-minute Film Festival and the ComArts sponsored .edu Film Fest, a statewide film festival for high school filmmakers.

Minneapolis Cable Access personality Brian Lloyd leads advanced video students in the production of the original television series, Get Real.  Students write, host, direct, and work camera and sound on this current event and community issues talk show.  Each week, a new student has the opportunity to be an on-air host.  Broadcast by the MTN Cable Network, Get Real can be viewed by Twin Cities cable customers or streamed on the web.

Beginning students will primarily develop a fundamental understanding of music theory, ear training, and keyboarding techniques. Advanced Students will develop skills in digital audio processing, advanced composing and arranging, audio engineering, mastering, and CD production. All students will develop the ability to create and arrange music in the modern digital studio using industry current software applications such as Garageband, and Pro Tools. This class is designed to accommodate students at every ability level.

A hands-on studio course that will focus on combining sound and music with video and animation. Students will explore the processes of editing, processing, and selecting music and sound effects. Time, frequency, and amplitude domain techniques, as well SMPTE synchronization formats and MIDI control will be studied. Students will work closely with the Video-Arts Department to "post-produce" the sound and music for student created 5 minute films. It is recommended but not required that you complete 3 terms of Digital Music before taking this class.

Learn how to put that movie idea on paper, and do it like the pros do.  This course teaches students to format, plot, present, and market a script like a professional.  Intro students complete a 30-page script and publish it in The Last Draft, ComArts annual compilation of screenplays.  Advanced students complete a feature length script and learn how to break into the market through festivals, contests, and self-marketing.  Students work in a Macintosh computer Lab using Movie Magic Screenwriter formatting software.

This class covers black and white darkroom photography and digital photography. You will learn how to make a pinhole camera, use a point-and-shoot camera and a single lens reflex 35mm camera, how to develop black and white film and make black and white prints. You will also learn studio lighting for still life (product photography) and portraits and Adobe Photoshop basics.

This class covers the basic elements and principle of design. It is taught primarily on the computer in the Mac lab. You will learn the basic language of visual art, how to use that language to create design and how to use Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.

This class covers the basic and advanced skills of drawing and painting. It is designed to accommodate all levels of skills. Students who have taken this class before will automatically be placed in the advanced level and will have a choice in how to develop their portfolios. Beginning students will learn how to draw what they see in a realistic manner. When we switch to painting, you will learn the basics of color theory and how to mix colors. Some of the techniques covered in drawing are contour and gesture drawing, working with graphite, charcoal and chalk. Some of the techniques covered in painting are sumie (Chinese and Japanese ink painting), pastels, tempera and acrylic.

This class covers the history of visual art. Don't be surprised if you learn something about politics, science, psychology, sociology, religion, literature, music, dance, theater and film in this class. Art is related to everything. We will be watching videos, reading about and discussing art and doing a few projects to better understand art techniques.

*ALL students that sign up for Digital Music or Audio Post Production will be required to do one of the following:
1. Complete 48 Lessons of Music Ace Maestro
2. Take a comprehensive music theory, ear training, and keyboarding test.
